A 42 year-old Co. Wicklow carpenter with a transplanted liver is the toast of Bangkok today after he got the Irish team off to a stunning start at the 16th World Transplant Games.
Tony Gartland, who lives at Hacketstown on the Wicklow/Carlow border, finished second in the 5km road race which was held at the unearthly hour of 7.30am to avoid the baking midday sun. Tony got a new lease of life when he got his new liver in June 1993, and, as part of his way of saying thanks to the family of the donor, he has competed in every World Transplant Games. It is his tenth World Games medal in that time, and today, he was beaten into second place by long-time rival Juan Puablo Juarez of Argentina. Later in the week, Tony will compete in the 800m and 1500m track races, and the 5km race walk. Tony had a long term condition prior to the transplant.
