ImageThe 44 year-old from Hacketstown has been training diligently all year – and next month it will be make or break time for Tony Gartland when he wears the green, white and gold with pride when he represents his country in Bangkok in August.

The World Transplant Games commence on Saturday, August 25th and Tony will be among 24 Irish athletes competing for the chance of a medal.

Tony’s events are 5,000, 8,000 and 1,500m track, he will also take part in the 5k race walk for ‘a bit of a challenge.’

“I have been in heavy training all year. I have been to five World Transplant Games in the last twelve years. And it’s all about doing your best,” said the Carlow man.

Tony underwent a liver transplant in June 1993. “I had a long term condition prior to the transplant. When I received the transplant I didn’t appreciate it at first. But now I am aware of the huge difference it has made to my life. I really live life to the full now,” added Tony, who has had excellent health since the transplant.

The busy man from Hacketstown won gold, silver and bronze for his country at the last World Games in Canada in 2005. And at the European Games in Slovenia in 2004 he came away with two gold medals for the 5k road race and the 800m track.

The 16th World Transplant Games run from August 25th until Sunday, September 2nd. “I really enjoy the camaraderie between the Irish team and the competitors at the Games and I will do the very best in my event. But I won’t take anything for granted,” said the carpenter.

The Games will promote awareness of organ donation and will be a chance for the athletes to give thanks for the gift of their transplants.

“The public need to know that there are people out there waiting for transplants,” added Tony.
