A Swords, Co. Dublin, man has today (WEDNESDAY) won a silver medal at the 17th World Transplant Games in Gold Coast, Australia – bringing to eight the total of Irish medals so far at the Games.

Philip Martin, Swords, captured his silver medal in the swimming pool when he came home second in the 100m Breaststroke, another occasion of great celerbation for the Irish squad.
This is his Philip’s first time to represent his country, and follows the donation by his sister Lorna last year. It was his third kidney transplant and he is now reporting great health and a full and active lifestyle.
“It is incredible how well I feel now since last year’s transplant, and taking part in these Games is my way of saying thanks to Lorna and the two earlier donors,” said Philip.
 Fifty countries have sent athletes to the games which celebrate the gift of life.
The 19-strong team, ranging in age from 22 to 64, have travelled Down Under with 13 new kidneys, five new livers and one new kidney-pancreas.
 “Every day, the athletes remember their donors, and each performance, let alone victory, is a way of saying thank you to the donors who gave them the gift of life,” said team manager Colin White.

The team is accompanied by manager Colin White; team doctor Emer Kilbride; physio Clare Hogan; and Mark Murphy, the CEO of the Irish Kidney Association.
