IKA Chairman looking forward to World Games

Paul Donohoe spent so much time in hospital as a young boy that he made strange with his own family when he was at home. The Doogarry, Co. Cavan, man was diagnosed with renal failure at 15 months old and it was thought that he had no chance of survival.

First time around for Paul and Vera

The Chairman and the honorary treasurer of the Irish Kidney Association will compete in the World Transplant Games this August. Chairman Paul Donohoe and honorary treasurer Vera Frisby, will compete in their first World Games in Bangkok. Both athletes have received kidney transplants.

My sporting highlight

From Irish Examiner, 17th December. The highlight of Liam Horan’s sporting year was reporting on the 16th World Transplant Games in Bangkok. The Irish team produced a record-breaking performance. But the real glory lay not just in the medals, but in the endless courage of every single competitor, all of whom had come through life-threatening illnesses.

Liver transplant recipients in web bid to help others

A 33 year-old Co. Mayo woman, who almost died before receiving an emergency liver transplant just 18 months ago, has set up her own website so she can deliver a powerful message to others in a similar predicament: “You can live a full and active life after transplantation.”
