Just as Ireland caused a major stir in the Cricket World Cup, the Irish team at the World Transplant Games are causing heads to turn with their unexpected prowess in the sport of Petanque.

Image A form of Boules - which originated in Provence in France 100 years ago and is known as the unofficial national sport of France - Petanque involves throwing metal balls towards a target on a fine gravel surface.
After the Gold medals for Bridie Nicholson and Hugo Boyce on Thursday at the World Transplant Games, people began to sit up and take notice of the Irish squad.
And, just to labour the point, in stepped the Irish Doubles pairing of Monica Finn and the aforementioned Bridie, who reached the final on Thursday evening.
A huge crowd gathered to watch the final game of the Petanque section of the Games, and, after a shakey start, Bridie and Monica clawed their way back into the game.
Their Danish opponents knew they were facing a dogged pair of fighters, but, alas, Bridie and Monica came up a fraction short – losing 11-9.
But there was still a great sense of achievement as they took their place on the podium and celebrated their silver medal.
Bridie is from Sligo, and Monica lives in Roscommon town.

Listen to the cheer from the Irish crowd as Bridie and Monica are announced as silver medal winners in petanque
