A 24 year-old Longford man, who has undergone two kidney transplants, is proud of the four medals at the European Transplant Games – and now he hopes to add some bigger medals to his collection at next month’s World Transplant Games in Thailand.
James Hannon from Edgeworthstown has competed for his country in the European Transplant Games in 2004 and 2006 bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals and has won a host of competitions at national level. “But this time I have the whole world against me,” he said modestly. “I am looking forward to the Games. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the transplant and I am thankful.” The 16th World Transplant Games take place in Bangkok this year and run from Saturday, August 25th until Sunday, September 2nd. He was put on dialysis before his second transplant. “I could do the dialysis at home which meant I could put it on and off when I wanted,” he added. “I had a serious infection in the tube in my stomach. This meant that I had to travel to Cavan for the dialysis from then on,” he said. “The dialysis was tough. I was exhausted from it and I was too tired to do anything. There were times when my blood pressure would drop and I became really sick with stomach cramps. “I felt like the second transplant was never going to come and I was fed up of the whole thing.” James’ prayers were answered in January 2005, when he received a transplant, transforming his quality of life. “I can all do the things I would not have been able to do before. I get to go to concerts now and I saw ‘The Who’ in Marlay Park recently and I went to see REM for a rehearsal of their new album,” added James. Simple things like a train ride to Dublin for the sales are now possible. James’ old school, Ard Scoil Padraic in Granard, raised €1,000 towards the sponsorship of the two-week trip to Thailand, which will raise awareness about organ donation. James will compete in the ball throw, ten pin bowling doubles, badminton singles and petanque singles at the Games. You can follow the team’s progress on www.transplantteamireland.com.
