ImageA 25 year-old Longford man, who has undergone two kidney transplants, is off to Germany this week to take part in the European Transplant & Dialysis Games.

James Hannon from Edgeworthstown has competed for his country in the European Transplant Games in 2004 and 2006 bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals, and and has also won a host of competitions at national level. Last year, he competed in the World Transplant Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

"I am looking forward to the Games. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the transplant and I am thankful," said James, who will be joined at the Games by his parents Martin and Teresa.

The fifth European Games run for a week, starting on Saturday next, August 31st. www.transplantteamireland.com.www.ika.ie for more information.

James received his first transplant at just nine years of age. "It lasted ten years and then it just gave up," he said.

He was put on dialysis before his second transplant. "I could do the dialysis at home which meant I could put it on and off when I wanted," he added.

Unfortunately, on a family trip to Galway, James became seriously ill and was brought to Beaumont hospital.

"I had a serious infection in the tube in my stomach. This meant that I had to travel to Cavan for the dialysis from then on," he said.

"The dialysis was tough. I was exhausted from it and I was too tired to do anything. There were times when my blood pressure would drop and I became really sick with stomach cramps.

"I felt like the second transplant was never going to come and I was fed up of the whole thing."

James’ prayers were answered in January 2005, when he received a transplant, transforming his quality of life.

"I can all do the things I would not have been able to do before. I get to go to concerts now can lead a normal life," added James.

Simple things like a train ride to Dublin for the sales are now possible.

Ireland will send 24 athletes to the Games, and they will be joined by family and friends. "It’s not just about the medals, but about the chance to celebrate the gift of life. That’s what makes these Games so special," said team manager Colin.

Huge number of new athletes on Irish team

This year, the Irish team welcomes a huge number of new athletes to the team. Keep an eye on this story – we will add to this list as we build the profiles of all the athletes.

We have received about 12 profiles from new athletes so far, and will be adding those here - if you haven't sent in your profile yet, see note below.

Some of the athletes mentioned below have competed previously for Ireland, but before the establishment of this site in 2007 - hence, their inclusion in this 'new' list.

Strictly speaking, so, it's new athletes, and athletes new to the site!
