The Irish team at the 16th World Transplant Games in Bangkok have now moved to the official Games hotel – the Bangkok Palace.
They spent the last few days acclimatising and overcoming the jet lag at the Classic Place Hotel. This afternoon (Saturday), many of the Irish athletes and their friends are visiting a nearby Weekend Market, where the Irish reputation for incessant shopping is likely to be enhanced. Some of the athletes this morning visited the stadium where the Track and Field events will take place, while the golfers had an early start as they went on the first team practice of the trip. “We are delighted with how things are going so far. The team is very enthusiastic and looking forward to getting into action,” he said. GAA fans in the group are making plans to see tomorrow’s Dublin v Kerry clash. Dubs make up the single biggest county block of athletes here – and the rest (‘culchies’, as country people are apparently known in Bangkok!) are signalling their intention to shout for Kerry. Next week, Limerick man John Loftus and his wife Trish and daughter Tara will be flying the green and white, with Kilkenny’s Emma Walsh donning the black and amber. Peace talks may be necessary!
