‘Run for a Life’ is Astellas Pharmaceutical’s inaugural charity fun run event. They hope to make this an annual affair, getting bigger and bolder each year.

Their main objectives are to raise funds and awareness of organ transplantation and organ transplant facilities in Ireland. All funds raised in the event will be used to help improve the lives of transplant patients in Ireland.
Saturday September 12th, saw the first one held in the beautiful surroundings of the lakes at Blessington.
Not ones to miss out on an opportunity to support this worthy cause, members of Transplant Team Ireland turned up in Wicklow on Saturday afternoon to ‘celebrate life through sport.’
We had Ned Crowe and his family, Tom Metcalfe, Peter Heffernan and his family, Colm Clifford and his partner Nicola Fitzgerald, Tony Gartland, Colin White and his wife Chikoyo.  Future members of the team Philip Kavanagh and Jonathan Craig were also there.

The weather was fabulous and the setting was fantastic so spirits were high from the outset.  The friendliness of the organisers and volunteers contributed to the positivity of the day.
There were just over 100 people taking part on the day.  There was a choice of a 3km run, a 6km run, a 15km cycle or a combined 6km run and 15km cycle so there was something for everyone.  The course for the run went through a forest beside a lake and brought back fond memories of cross country running in school.
It was a day for everyone as the emphasis was more on participation than competition as many walked the 3km circuit.

When the dust settled, Tony Gartland won the 6km race – what a perfect advertisement for organ donation and transplantation!  Colin White won the 3km race.  There was a great dinner put on in the hosting hotel, the Avon Ri, and everyone went home with smiles on their faces, good memories and, in some cases, aching limbs.
It is set to become an annual event and includes activities such as face-painting for children so it’s a great family day out.  Everyone should watch out for it as it is a simple case of, the bigger we can make the event, the bigger the message we can get out promoting organ donation and transplantation.
