3 Medals for Laois Teen at World Transplant Games

Robbie Lyons (17), a kidney recipient from The Swan, Co. Laois took Gold and Silver today at the 18th World Transplant Games in Gothenburg Sweden. This Irish athlete took Gold in the long jump after reaching an impressive 5.36 meters. Robbie is absolutely delighted to have taken Gold and he is very pleased with his performance. Robbie also raced in the 100m sprint and what an exciting competition it proved to be. Robbie got off to a great start but Lewis Akrail (17) from the UK was hot on his heels. The Irish representative put everything he had into the last few meters and won Silver after what was a very close and exciting race to watch. There was 400’s of a second between the Irish and British competitor. Robbie's final event, ball throw, saw him take silver. This meant that Lyons won medals in every event he competed in

Robbie spoke at the track stating, “I am delighted with the win, but really no words can describe how happy I feel. I love when the competition is tight; it makes me push myself harder. Robbie mother, Angie and sister Stef have been great support throughout the games. Speaking to Angie, who was filled with joy and emotion she explained how happy she is. “ I am extremely proud of Robbie and I feel like a ‘well of emotion’ especially after everything he has been through. Before the race, I gave him the space he needed to focus and prepare, but I was waiting with open arms at the finish line to give him a big hug.”

This is Ireland’s biggest ever team competing at the World Transplant Games. The Irish team of 33 athletes range in age from 9 to 70+  and are among 1100 athletes from  over 50 countries who are participate in the Games which are being held in Gothenburg.
