The Irish team’s medal tally, since events kicked off on Saturday, is 18 medals including 8 Gold, 3 Silver and 7 Bronze.
Transplant Games veteran, John Moran, age 52, from Glasnevin, secured his second Gold in the Games today for a 5k time trial cycling event crossing the finishing line in 8 minutes and 55 seconds. He thanks his kidney donor brother Frank for his transplant which took place 26 years ago. John also won a Gold for the 20k cycling event on Sunday with a time of 34 minutes and 35 seconds.
The second Gold of today was scored in a Golf Gross competition by 17 year old Eoin Hurley from Waterford city who competed against older golfers in the 18 to 29 age category. Eoin won his first medal of the tournament yesterday, a Silver, in Badminton when he was placed second after a putting in a fantastic performance. Eoin narrowly missed out on a bronze medal on Sunday in a Golf team event.
Also in the Golf Gross event today, liver transplant recipient Deirdre Faul from Dalkey, secured a Silver medal in her age category 40-49 after just yesterday winning a Gold medal in the Squash event.
Another notable success story today was when an elated Paul Prendergast, a kidney transplant recipient from Santry, Dublin 9, secured his first medal ever, a Bronze, for Petanque in the 70-79 years age category. The veteran has been a member of the Irish Transplant Team for several years competing in other European and World Transplant Games.
His teammate, liver transplant recipient Catherine Murphy from Aghabullogue, Cork also won a Bronze medal today for Petanque in the 60-69 age category.
Kidney transplant recipient James Nolan (from the Curragh) was delighted to win his second medal at the Games by coming first in his Golf event today (individual event 40-49 age category) and securing a Gold. On Sunday James and his teammate Mick Dwyer (from Cabinteely), also a kidney transplant recipient, won a combined silver medal in a Golf Pairs event. The pair were visibly overjoyed as they were announced as second place winners.
The last medal awarded to a member of the Irish Transplant Team today, was a Bronze medal for kidney transplant recipient Valerie Twomey, from Crosshaven, Cork which she won in the Tennis singles event.
Other outstanding successes by the Irish team since the World Games began include the youngest member of the team, 9 year old kidney transplant recipient, Oisin O'Gorman from Lismore, Waterford, who has won 3 Gold medals for the 50m race, 10-pin bowling and Badminton events. Oisin’s father Kieran donated a kidney to him two years ago.
On Saturday, Galway native (Renmore) Sinead McGowan, having travelled from Sydney to compete with the Irish team, won a bronzemedal in the 3k mini marathon in a fantastic time of 15 minutes 40 seconds. On Saturday also, Liver transplant recipient Tony Gartland from Hacketstown also secured a bronze for the 5k mini marathon coming in at a time of 20 minutes 47 seconds.
Now living in Spain, Angela Sherlock, a kidney transplant recipient from Walkinstown, Dublin won a bronze medal for Bowling on Sunday.Eamonn Malone from Cavan, the oldest member of the Irish Team, also a kidney transplant recipient, won a bronze medal also in his age category for Bowling which also took place on Sunday.
This is Ireland’s biggest ever team competing at the World Transplant Games. The Irish team of 33 athletes range in age from 9 to 70+ and are among 1100 athletes from over 50 countries who are participate in the Games which are being held in Gothenburg. The Team will return home to Ireland on Friday, 24th June.
The Irish Team members have all received major organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas. The Irish Kidney Association is responsible for managing Transplant Team Ireland’s participation at the Games.

At the previous World Transplant Games which were held in Gold Coast, Australia in 2009, the Irish team of 19 athletes scooped 10 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze. The 22 medals haul placed Ireland eleventh out of the 50 competing countries on the medals table. Ireland's chances of earning more medals is looking very promising!
