John Moran (Dublin) who is longest serving Irish representative was on top form as anticipated and he did us proud. As the only squad member who entered the cycling race, John did his country proud by winning Gold... It was a 20k cycle on a track with many challenges including, steep hills, sharp bends and extremely slippery surfaces. This didn’t deter John, who took these challenges in his stride. Ireland’s cyclist took control and exploded ahead of the other athletes, leaving them for dust. John commented that ‘It feels great to win gold’ considering the competition in his category. He felt thrilled that he ‘got away early at the start’ as his competitors were almost catching him on the hills. John, who is accustomed to winning said that he doesn’t put pressure on himself to win gold, just to cycle well. John jokingly said that he felt more pressure from others who expected him to win. Moran has a secret winning charm, he used the same bike this time round that he used when he first participated and won Gold in the WTG tournament in Innsbruck, Austria in 1987. Since then he has tallied up numerous medals from both the World and European Games. Next up for John is a time trial in cycling and we all hope for a repeat winning performance. |
