Ireland’s transplant athletes, who were hugely successful on the world stage last month, are to be honoured by the Lord Mayor of Dublin at a special ceremony. Image
The team travelled to Gold Coast, Australia, with 13 new kidneys, five new livers and one kidney-pancreas – and returned home with 22 medals from the 17th World Transplant Games.
Now Dublin’s Lord Mayor Emer Costello is to host the team at a special civic reception on Friday, November 27th, from 12noon to 3pm.
The reception will take place in the Mansion House in Dublin city centre.
“This is a very big honour for the team, who excelled themselves in the Gold Coast. And, as always, the key message is the importance of organ donation.”
The Games saw over 2,000 athletes compete in a wide range of sports.
“These athletes show that people who receive transplants can live a full and active life. The enthusiasm of all athletes at the Games is the best possible way of illustrating just how crucial it is that people carry organ donor card,” said Mr White.
There was another honour for the Irish contingent when Mr White was elected onto the council of the World Transplant Games Federation. This is a timely appointment as Mr White will co-ordinate Ireland’s hosting of next year’s European Transplant & Dialysis Games in Dublin.
