Although all transplant stories differ, there is one that has a lot in common

Irish transplant athlete Oisin O’Gorman, from Lismore, Co. Waterford and Johan De Jeegers Jr. from Middleburg, South Africa received organs from their father. Also the same age, both 9 year old youngsters met in the hotel in Gothenburg, Sweden where their respective teams are residing for the 18th World Transplant Games. It is not unusual for teams to mingle and bond at the Games and this is how to two boys fathers met.

Kieran O’Gorman and Johan De Jeegers both gave their sons a life saving organ. Oisin’s father, Kieran, spoke about his son’s amazing performance and success and meeting another donor dad. Oisin became ill in 2008 and needed a kidney transplant as soon as possible. When Kieran was told he was a match, there were no hesitations and he couldn’t wait to give his kidney to Oisin. Ten months later the surgery was complete and both made a speedy recovery.

The Waterford man spoke passionately about how much he is enjoying the games. “I am delighted to be here and I’m so proud of Oisin. His achievements are out of this world. Coming home with four medals, including 3 gold and 1 silver, is just fantastic. The best thing that we have gotten out of the Games is the new friendships that we have made. We are already making plans to go to the next World Games in South Africa in two years time. Johan and his family have asked us to stay longer and holiday with them. Its just fantastic the amount support within the Irish transplant team and from family and friends. Oisin has enjoyed his time in Sweden immensely and is looking forward to going home to show people his medals.”
