Your country wants you, but only if you’ve got a new heart, or a new kidney, or a new liver, or a new lung, or a new pancreas – or if you’re on dialysis treatment.
The management of the successful Irish Transplant team have today (TUESDAY) issued an appeal for transplant recipients and dialysis patient to sign up for the team as Ireland beefs up its number of competitors for European and World Games. This follows the team’s record-breaking performance at last month’s World Transplant Games in Bangkok, where 23 athletes picked up 39 medals. After returning home, they were feted by President Mary McAleese at a special function in Aras an Uachtarain. “One of the key messages of the World Games is that having a transplant can be the start of a whole new life in many ways – including taking part in Transplant Games at European and World level,” said team manager Colin White. “We are appealing to people of all ages out there who have had heart, liver, lung, kidney, or pancreas transplants to get in touch with us, and I am sure we can help them take up a sport that will suit them. We also want to hear from people who are on dialysis and who can compete, for example, in next year’s European Transplant and Dialysis Games in Germany. “There are opportunities in sports such as track and field, table tennis, Petanque (a form of French boules), cycling, bowling, golf, squash, badminton, swimming – in short, there’s something for everyone.” Team captain Deirdre Faul, a liver transplant recipient and one of the stars of last month’s World Games, said “transplant recipients can get great enjoyment and fulfilment out of taking part against people who have also had transplants.” She added: “It’s a whole new lease of life, and some of the best times of my life have occurred through active involvement in sport since my transplant.” Transplant recipients and dialysis patients who would like to take part in transplant and dialysis sports should contact Colin White on 01 6305306 or by email
