Emma Walsh from Kilkenny will compete in the World Transplant Games for the second time when she travels to Bangkok this month. And the Ballyragget lady will wear the green, white and gold with pride when she competes in the 100m and 200m track, ten pin bowling, shot putt and a relay at the World Games which run from Saturday, August 25th until Sunday, September 2nd.

“I will do the best I can and hopefully bring home a medal,” said Emma.

The 29 year-old is no stranger to competition. “I competed at the World Games in Canada 2005 and I took home two medals and I was at the European Transplant and Dialysis Games in Slovenia 2004 where I won three medals and in Hungary 2006 I won 5 medals.”

In preparation for the Games Emma has been attending Springhill Court Hotel Gym three times a week, which is in keeping with the Irish Kidney Association’s message of healthy living through sport and the return to an active and full life after a transplant.

“I had my first Kidney Transplant in Feburary of 1988 when I was nine yearss old and I had it for about eleven years,” said Emma.

“After undergoing dialysis for two years I got my second kidney transplant in February 2001. I am very grateful to my donor.”

Emma’s family and friends will cheer her on from home and remain in regular contact as she makes another bid for world glory.

Huge number of new athletes on Irish team

This year, the Irish team welcomes a huge number of new athletes to the team. Keep an eye on this story – we will add to this list as we build the profiles of all the athletes.

We have received about 12 profiles from new athletes so far, and will be adding those here - if you haven't sent in your profile yet, see note below.

Some of the athletes mentioned below have competed previously for Ireland, but before the establishment of this site in 2007 - hence, their inclusion in this 'new' list.

Strictly speaking, so, it's new athletes, and athletes new to the site!
