The Irish team performed superbly in the ultra-competitive Badminton
arena, which was the focal point of Wednesday action here at the 5th
European Transplant & Dialysis Games in Wurzburg, Germany. The arena was extremely warm, which proved taxing for all players, but when a long day of competition came to an end, Ireland could boast four medals John Cormican, Deirdre Faul, Harry Ward and Mick Dwyer. John had a gruelling schedule in his singles competition and played brilliantly to reach the finals. The final proved to be one step too far for the Co. Roscommon farmer, but he won many admirers for his tenacious play throughout the day. Deirdre also won a silver medal after battling hard in the womens singles. She brought to bear all her squash expertise she was once ranked No. 1 in Leinster at U17, and it showed as she fought her way to the silver medal. Mick and Harry teamed up for the mens doubles, and proved a formidable team. The two Dubs gelled well together and produced some excellent badminton to get to the final. Four medals from the badminton was quite a haul in light of the stiff competition from all around Europe, and, with Ireland hosting the European Games in 2010, all four will defend their titles on home soil.
