ImageIt all happened very fast for Deirdre Faul. “I was living England when I became ill. It started with vertigo and then I got jaundice.

My consultant suspected gallstones but when I was brought into hospital it was then they discovered that there was a lot more going on,” said the Dalkey woman.

“I had complete liver failure.  Two days later I received a liver transplant in the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London.”

The 39 year-old is the captain of the Irish team preparing for the World Transplant Games in Bangkok, Thailand, this month.

Twenty-four Irish athletes will take part in the 16th World Games, which run from Saturday, August 25th, until Sunday, September 2nd. This will be Deirdre’s first time competing in the Games.

“I have been waiting to participate in the World Transplant Games for two years, because I missed out on the last games in Canada in 2005, I was only transplanted in 2003,” said

Deirdre, who works full time for the Drug Treatment Centre Board, won six medals at the European Games in Hungary last year.
This month she will compete in squash, golf, swimming and ten-pin bowling.

“My family and friends have given me a huge amount of encouragement and helped with fundraising. In particular my parents and sister provide support on all levels since I have two children, aged nine and seven. They will also look after the boys when I go to Bangkok,” she said.

The focus of the trip to the World Transplant Games is to raise awareness and show the results that organ donation can have.

“People don’t realise that there are many adults and children waiting for organ donations, their quality of life will be infinitely improved after transplantation. I hope the World Transplant Games and the publicity it generates will encourage more people to carry an organ donor card, ” added the mother of two.
