A Cobh man who received a new liver just over a year ago is today (TUESDAY) the toast of the Irish contingent at the 5th European Transplant and Dialysis Games in Germany – and two fellow Corkonians collected silver medals to complete a great day for the Rebel County in the darts competition.
A group of five athletes, plus the team physio, will make up a big Cork contingent representing Ireland at next week’s European Transplant & Dialysis Games, in Wurzburg, Germany – and their main mission is to spread the gospel of organ donation.
Cork athlete Daniel McCarthy, a veteran of European and World Games, has written a book on his heart transplant experience. It’s called My New Heart. He wrote it 12 years ago and sold every copy.
Daniel McCarthy from Midleton was given only three weeks to live when he was born – but a heart bypass and a heart transplant later the Cork man will represent his country in the World Transplant Games in Bangkok this month.
Irish running legend Eamonn Coghlan is to deliver a motivational talk to an “inspirational” bunch of Irish athletes – all of whom have had major organ transplants or are currently on dialysis.
